Food Technology is a branch of food science. Food technology is the application of food science to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution, and use of safe, nutritious, and wholesome food. Food processing is the set of methods and techniques used to transform raw ingredients into food for the consumption of humans and animals. Food scientists and food technologists study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food. Depending on their area of specialization, food scientists may develop ways to process, preserve, package, or store food, according to industry and government specifications and regulations. Consumers seldom think of the vast array of foods and the research and development that has resulted in the means to deliver tasty, nutritious, safe, and convenient foods. The work of food technologists is mainly in hotels, food industries, quality control, hospitals, packaging, industries, distilleries, soft drink factories and rice mills, etc. They also are into manufacturing industries by using their expertise in monitoring the storage, processing, hygiene temperatures and experimenting etc. In India Food Processing industry is gaining momentum as the consumer food industry, which includes pasta, breads, cakes, pastries, corn flakes, ready to eat and ready to cook products, cocoa products, biscuits, soft drinks, beer, alcohol beverages, mineral and packaged water and segment of consumer foods is seeing an upward trend.
Eligibility for Food Technology
Various programs are available in food technology courses. Who wish to do B.Sc. in Food Technology, he should have passed 10+2 examinations with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as the main subjects. It is three year full time course. The candidate opting for M.Sc. in food technology should have the Bachelor’s degree in science with chemistry. It is two year full time course. After completion of M.Sc, the candidate can proceed for Ph.D. program.

Food Technology And Processing Industry is a growing industry with good job prospects. Food Technologists have bright prospects in salaried jobs in the public sector and the private sector. After a course in Food Technology, one can find jobs in the food processing companies, packaging companies, Research laboratories, manufacturing industries, etc. Also with Public sector undertakings in the Department of food of the government. A graduate in home science, nutrition and hotel management can also fetch you good jobs in this sector. At the entry level the food technologists can earn around Rs.5000 to Rs.8000 per month. Those who have an experience of around five years can draw a salary in the range of Rs.10000 to Rs.15000 per month. And those who have worked for 15 years can earn up to Rs.30000 per month.
